Positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-[F-18]-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) was performed in twenty seven patients who had musculoskeletal tumors in order to determine if there is a relationship between histologic grade and tumor uptake of FDG. These patients had been evaluated previously with computed tomography (CT) and/or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, The diagnoses were confirmed with open biopsy. Fifteen benign lesions and twelve malignant lesions were included in this study. Generally high-grade malignancies had significant greater uptake of FDG than low-grade malignancies or benign lesions. Benign lesions such as giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia, contrary, malignant lesions of fibrogenic or chondrogenic origin showed low level of SUV. The current study suggest that the utility of FDG-PET imaging as an adjunct to CT or MR imaging in the evaluation of both benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors. But simple semiquentitative assessment of FDG accumulation (SUV) within the suspected malignant tumor to that of benign lesion was not successful in making distinction.
